Icare’s tonometers enable measuring and following the condition of eyes even at home. As a new tonometer was launched, the company wanted to develop a convenient mobile application to support the patients. A challenging process turned into a success – now the solution is widely praised even by the elderly.

Common benefits for patients and doctors

Icare is the global market leader of handheld tonometers. The company has worked strenuously to enable tonometry at home. As that has been made possible, an entirely new way to study and cure eye diseases has been established.

Home tonometry helps minimize visits to the hospital, which makes both the patients’ life and the doctors’ work significantly easier. In addition, the mobile application supports and encourages patients, most of whom are elderly, to home tonometry. With the application, the tonometry data can be conveniently sent to a cloud service where the patient and the doctor can review the measurement history together.

For the needs of people, on the terms of health technology

Comprehensive track record in similar projects played a significant role as Vincit was selected by Icare to develop the application. The project was kicked off by thoroughly thinking what kind of functionalities the service should have, and what were its main requirements. At the conceptualization phase, the user needs became the driving idea, and the technologies were chosen accordingly. In addition, the team put plenty of effort in discovering what would motivate the patients who are not necessarily digital natives and not willing to do the measurements themselves.

Another major challenge was created by the special requirements of health technology towards this kind of an application. Country-specific regulations, the need for twenty language versions, license agreements and approvals from various authorities, among other issues, had to be acknowledged in the design work. Thanks to smooth collaboration, a complicated entity was successfully turned into a clear service.

Agile project management pays off

As the mobile application required plenty of documentation and testing, the project was challenging to begin with. Vincit raised to the occasion by integrating into Icare’s own development process and building the most agile way to implement the service based on that. The high quality of the project was ensured by spending ample time to planning the tests, to carrying them out and to documenting the results. In addition, active tests of the service were begun already at the conceptualization phase: this resulted in ability to carry out the development work based on genuine customer feedback instead of mere assumptions.

Easy to measure, smooth to send

The new application has been positively received in every respect. The patients, including the elderly, have complimented the user-friendliness. They have started both doing home tonometry and sending the results to doctors. The service has proven its worth especially during the pandemic as the burden at medical stations has been heavier than usually. Home tonometry has lightened the workload of health care professionals and enabled the essential, regular monitoring of intraocular pressure.

Vincit’s user-friendly approach is clearly visible in the outcome of our project. The stylish application is easy to use, and it has managed to increase the popularity of home tonometry within a demanding target group. Holistic development work continues together.
