Ambitious software development

Software Developer Jarkko Kaura comments:"At Vincit I get to do things that I have studied. I have the chance to develop my competence and get to know modern technologies. I have been involved, for example, in the development of a server system based on EJB3 technology, designed databases, and implemented user interfaces using Google's Web Toolkit.

Communication in Vincit has been concise and straightforward. The leadership culture here is open and transparent. Every couple of weeks we arrange an internal Vincit meeting where we go through the overall situation and everyone has an opportunity to tell what they have been doing.

At Vincit we are always trying to develop our work and practices. We have our own web systems for internal development, an idea channel, and a wiki where everyone can share ideas related to working, or add other personal creations. This is encouraged and rewarded.

It is interesting that we have been hiring people even during the recession. Vincit has positioned itself as the software house with the best talent, and I am enthusiastic to be involved in such an endeavour. I am ambitious in regards to software development, so this is the perfect environment for me. When the employer has high expectations, one strives to fulfil those expectations."

We work as a team

Software Developer Tomi Majuri comments:"I have worked as a software developer at Vincit since the beginning. I came to Vincit from a larger software company because I wanted to work in a smaller company - I have not had second thoughts. It is much easier to have an impact here. I studied software engineering at the Tampere University of Technology.

At Vincit I have been involved in different kinds of projects: health care technology and mobile devices. We have not been constrained to one field. Our project teams have had fairly free hands, within the limits of the customer projects of course. Our way of working places an emphasis on overall communication and creative thinking. Everyone has the chance to affect the daily work. Employees are given responsibility if they are willing to take it, but we are not alone with the big decisions.

The best part of Vincit's company culture is the feeling of togetherness and the pride that we are working in such a great company: you can tell people where you work and never have to look away in shame.

Of course, the aim is to grow into a bigger and better company, but we also want to retain the feeling that everyone knows each other and know that they are in the right place. I have a lot of trust in Vincit that this will happen. How are we going to get there, you say? I wish I knew. One of the ways will probably be that we do not try to force a corporate hierarchy on Vincit, but instead concentrate on working in teams as we have thus far.

AI research, for fun

Csaba Kertesz comments:"I enjoy my Hobby, Sony's AIBO robotics technology. With the aid of wireless technology, the decision making has moved from the robot's "brains" to a much more powerful computer. My aim is to improve this artificial intelligence.

Although my hobby with the AIBOs has different goals than my work-related projects, the underlying technology is the same. My own hobbies develop my competence. This is why Vincit supports my hobby both financially and by providing me more time for my personal project.

As it is an open source project, everyone can use the software I have developed. And even though it is a personal project, I produce quality code. We are doing important research. AI and human thought will remain my interest - even if I did change the object of my study, this is a project that I will continue for life.

I trust my bosses, and I am confident that they will have work for me. They are very focused on personnel and do a lot for their employees. The leadership here really listens to their employees on how to develop the business. I believe that the company will grow significantly."

Opinions matter

Jarno Malmari comments:"At vincit, I have worked for example on a graphics driver for a mobile device, and with user interface components related to patient monitoring equipment. User interfaces and mobile devices seem to be all the rage these days.

At Vincit, I have been able to affect what kinds of projects I get to participate in. For example, I was making something as a hobby when I heard of a customer project that was using the same technology. I asked about the project and got assigned into the project. This really made me feel that my opinions and interests are appreciated.

I have worked with 3D graphics and also made some small games and simulations. This experience has already been useful in a couple of projects.

Everyone at Vincit is really nice. I have not met anyone that I could not get along with. Although I only knew one of these guys before joining Vincit, I have made friends in projects and on coffee breaks. Vincit is growing fast. It will be interesting to see how the team spirit evolves as new people join us."

Towards bigger projects

Mikko Mehtonen comments: "Vincit has improved all the time. I think the operational model here is very good and clear. I have been involved, for example, in a project related to licence management and building prototypes for a new kind of user interface. As a hobby, I am creating better call forwarding settings for Nokia's N900 because the vanilla settings are quite limited. I think hobbies are beneficial for my work, as it is a way to become acquainted with new technologies.

Apparently I am also supposed to compliment our company events: we always have fun activities and get to socialise with new employees. The best event thus far was our trip to Riga where got to try bungee jumping, among other things.

I believe Vincit will grow, and I have the chance to take responsibility for larger projects."
